  • Description

    This large round-corner cabinet is defined by its simplicity and original resplendent red lacquer, a visually striking vernacular style.

    The red lacquer is wonderfully aged, the patina consistent with constant use over time: some of the black lacquer undercoating is visible which enhances its unique character.

    Its shape is softened by rounded edges, the visually strong vertical moulding at the outer edge of the doors, and the three panels at the bottom. The doors with wood pivot joints are removable.

    The metalwork is the classical circular plate, holding two delicate door pulls, which gives a strong visual centre to the piece. There are two shelves for storage.

    Traditionally Chinese homes had no built in cupboards, meaning households stored all possessions in cabinets and chests, which became central features in the room.

  • I have a modern house and the clean lines of antique Chinese furniture suit it very well. The occasional red lacquer piece looks striking, such as a coffer I use as a sideboard in my dining area. I particularly love a pair of narrow, columnar walnut Gansu cabinets and I think they will enhance a contemporary walnut dining table I am awaiting delivery. I like the visual interest of old wood and mixing old and new adds character to a decor.
