    This chest has finesse and presence that reflects the style of a handsome storage piece used during the late Qing Dynasty.

    It is an interesting and practical piece that stands out on its own integrated base and offers a table like surface for books and decorative pieces.

    The front was used as a canvas to paint an idyllic rural scene; traces of the painted decoration convey the tranquil theme of man in harmony with nature. The painting, worn with age,  works well with the patina of the original lacquer, which is crackled in parts.

    The original lock and hardware have survived.

    As Chinese homes had no built in storage such as closets, chests and cabinets were integral to the workings and decoration of the household.

  • I have a modern house and the clean lines of antique Chinese furniture suit it very well. The occasional red lacquer piece looks striking, such as a coffer I use as a sideboard in my dining area. I particularly love a pair of narrow, columnar walnut Gansu cabinets and I think they will enhance a contemporary walnut dining table I am awaiting delivery. I like the visual interest of old wood and mixing old and new adds character to a decor.
