  • Description

    A rare and visually striking folding chair with a sculptural symbolic presence. Faded gilt painted carvings decorate the back splat, a bell representing success, deer representing longevity.

    The front legs each continue as a single, subtly curved shaped piece through the seat, to form the outer frame of the back joining the carved crest rail.

    Crossed legs are joined by pivots, while at the bottom they are joined by floor level stretchers, above which sits a footrest. The metalware is original.

    This form is an evolution from the simple folding stool or hu’chuang that brought raised level sitting to China, combined with a high back, protruding crest rail with delightful upturned ends and the curved back splat of the classic yokeback form.

  • I have a modern house and the clean lines of antique Chinese furniture suit it very well. The occasional red lacquer piece looks striking, such as a coffer I use as a sideboard in my dining area. I particularly love a pair of narrow, columnar walnut Gansu cabinets and I think they will enhance a contemporary walnut dining table I am awaiting delivery. I like the visual interest of old wood and mixing old and new adds character to a decor.
